SIP Gateway – Microsoft teams
Microsoft Teams now has the capability to connect and utilize several legacy, non-native Microsoft IP Phones. SIP Gateway is a 100% cloud-based solution, no infrastructure required and no additional cost.
Microsoft skype for business online is retired, As a part of this change, the manufacturer advises those legacy systems users to migrate to Teams. This new SIP Gateway service should be good news for all Skype for Business customers who can now re-purpose a wide range of legacy SIP phones. “No additional setup is needed for core functionality such as authentication, calling, calendar and presence, and meetings, using 3PIP phones”
Pre-requisites
· IP deskphone must be Microsoft certified
· IP phones must run in native SIP mode. Skype for business mode is not supported.
· Phone will be provisioned by Microsoft
· User must have teams phone system license
· User is fully enabled for Teams phone system

Features

Activation of device
SIP devices can be used for calls must be enabled in Global or User based Calling policy.
Some devices are required to have native SIP firmware before deployment
For each SIP device, set one of the following SIP Gateway provisioning server URLs:

Network requirements
The below ports and IP range must be allowed on firewall
UDP ports : 49152-53242
TCP port : 5061
IP range: 52.112.0.0/14 - 52.120.0.0/14
Admin Tasks from Teams Admin Center.
All the phones are listed in teams admin center under SIP devices. Administrator can perform tasks like upgrading, scheduling an upgrade, restarting the device from teams admin center.

Select the device and click on restart to reboot SIP phone
Phone can be signed in remotely using teams admin center and by not relying on phones web utility
To provision a new device, go to Phones under “Teams devices” and select Add MAC address manually
If mass deployment of phones is required. CSV file with MAC address can also be uploaded (use option Upload multiple MAC addresses)
Cons:
Although SIP gateway does provide lot of features to enable your legacy phones for Microsoft teams, it does have few drawbacks as well. Few of the major one's are listed below
No remote sign in
Cannot be managed through Audiocodes OVOC( One voice operation center).
E911 notification support is not available
Conclusion:
SIP gateway is a fantastic option to utilize your legacy devices with Microsoft teams. Microsoft Teams SIP Gateway is a great way to add next-gen calling capabilities to your organization.
It’s important to note that Microsoft will continue to support Skype for Business phones to sign into Teams via 3PIP Gateway beyond 2023. However, no new investments are planned for 3PIP Gateway, and 3PIP phones will be enabled via SIP Gateway after 3PIP Gateway end of life
However, if any organisation is planning to buy new devices, it is recommended to buy native teams phone for more features and unmatched user experience.
